The head coach of a high school women’s basketball team in a small community in New York’s Adirondacks has been dismissed from his position after a controversial incident that occurred at the end of a state championship game. The Northville Central School District confirmed that the coach was fired for pulling a player’s ponytail in a moment of frustration following the team’s loss in the Class D New York State championship game.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media and local news outlets, showing the coach, identified as Jim Zullo according to MaxPreps, grabbing the player’s hair and scolding her while another player tried to intervene. The district expressed deep concern over the coach’s behavior and stated that he would no longer be coaching for the school.

Superintendent Sarah Chauncey clarified that the coach’s services have been terminated, although the statement did not explicitly mention his firing. The player involved in the incident, believed to be a high school senior based on her jersey number, has not been publicly identified. Mr. Zullo has not responded to requests for comment on the matter.

According to reports, the altercation occurred after the player directed an expletive at the coach when he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team. Spectators, like Alyssa Leroux of Watertown, N.Y., were shocked by the coach’s actions, with Ms. Leroux capturing the incident on video and sharing it on social media. The video quickly gained attention, with hundreds of reactions condemning the coach’s behavior.

The community, particularly those supporting the LaFargeville team, which won the championship, expressed disappointment in the coach’s actions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of sportsmanship and appropriate behavior, especially when working with young athletes. The Northville Central School District is taking steps to address the situation and ensure the well-being of its students moving forward.
