Germany shocked Italy in the UEFA Nations League quarter-final with a highly unusual corner kick that led to a goal. The scene in Dortmund was reminiscent of Liverpool’s famous comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League, with the Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma caught out of position.

The bizarre chain of events started with Donnarumma making a stunning save to push a header behind for a corner. Italy, already trailing in the match, seemed disorganized and frustrated. As the players gathered outside the six-yard box to discuss their tactics, Germany’s Joshua Kimmich quickly took the corner kick.

With Donnarumma and the entire Italian defense out of position, Germany’s Jamal Musiala found himself unmarked in the six-yard box. A ball boy’s quick delivery of the ball and Musiala’s alertness allowed Germany to capitalize on the confusion and score a goal.

The goal not only showcased Germany’s quick thinking but also highlighted Italy’s defensive vulnerabilities from set pieces. Despite Italy’s valiant comeback in the second half, the damage was already done in a chaotic first half.

Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, had expressed concerns about their struggles from set plays before the match. Musiala’s goal only added to Italy’s woes in defending corners.

In the end, Germany emerged victorious with a 2-0 lead, securing their spot in the next round of the UEFA Nations League. The unusual goal will be a topic of conversation for Italy for some time, as they reflect on their defensive lapses and missed opportunities in the quarter-final clash.
