The Romanian Constitutional Court’s Controversial Decision: A Political Earthquake
The recent ruling by the Romanian Constitutional Court to annul last year’s first-round presidential election has ignited a political inferno, both domestically and internationally. Many observers are quick to label this move a de facto coup d’état, particularly as it also disqualified the leading candidate, Călin Georgescu, who boasted a 45% approval rating before the court’s intervention.
Three judges from the court are now under the microscope for their potential affiliations with influential globalist circles. Notably, two of these judges have connections to billionaire George Soros, while the third has ties to U.S. President Joe Biden.
The crux of the controversy lies with Judge Elena Tănăsescu, who has become emblematic of this judicial upheaval. She served on the board of the Institute of Public Policy in Bucharest from 2005 to 2019—an organization that has historically received considerable funding from the CEE Fund, a part of Soros’ expansive philanthropic empire.
Critics contend that this institute functions as a vector for foreign influence, shaping public opinion to favor globalist agendas. Tănăsescu’s previous advisory role to President Klaus Iohannis, a central figure in Romania’s entrenched political landscape, raises further questions about her impartiality, especially since the annulled election effectively extended Iohannis’ presidency.

Interestingly, Tănăsescu was appointed to the Romanian Constitutional Court for a nine-year term by President Iohannis himself, as investigative journalist Iosefina Pascal reported.
Another judge under scrutiny, Bogdan Licu, has affiliations with Freedom House, an organization known for receiving substantial funding from both USAID and Soros-related entities.

Additionally, Livia Stanciu, the third judge in question, received personal commendations from then-Vice President Joe Biden in 2014 for her contributions to Romania’s judicial framework. This endorsement has led many to question her independence and the extent to which external influences may have shaped her judicial decisions.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his aide James O’Brien are reportedly under investigation by U.S. intelligence agencies, allegedly for exerting pressure on Romanian authorities leading to the election annulment—an inquiry believed to have originated from directives during the Trump administration, as reported by a Swiss think tank.
The court’s ruling on December 6, 2024, which invalidated Georgescu’s first-round electoral victory, marks an unprecedented episode in Romania’s post-communist political history.
His primary rival, liberal candidate Elena Lasconi, was poised to confront him in the final round on December 8, but this abrupt decision derailed the electoral process.
With discontent simmering, both Romanians and international observers perceive the court’s ruling as a blatant and corrupt maneuver designed to quash an outsider’s challenge to the political establishment.
Compounding the chaos, Marcel Ciolacu from the Social Democratic Party, seen as the favored candidate of Brussels and globalists, was eliminated in the first round by a slim margin. His defeat has only intensified speculation regarding the court’s intervention as a strategic play to favor candidates aligned with Euro-Atlantic globalist policies.
Following the annulment, Georgescu’s support has surged, with polls indicating he could secure an outright victory in the rescheduled May election.

Georgescu is not the only candidate facing disqualification. The Constitutional Court also barred SOS Romania Leader and MEP Diana Iovanovici-Sosoaca from running, citing her critical stance toward NATO and the EU as ‘incompatible’ with Romania’s ‘democratic values.’
In a televised interview, Georgescu vowed to hold accountable those he accuses of “high treason” and pledged to dismantle Soros-influenced networks within Romania on his first day in office, an assertion likely to unsettle the globalist establishment.
As the political landscape shifts dramatically, Romania’s future hangs in the balance. The ongoing struggle for judicial independence, foreign influence, and electoral integrity remains a contentious battleground.
