JuJu Watkins had a lot riding on her shoulders from the moment she arrived at USC. She was touted as the player who would bring the program back to glory and carry the torch for women’s college basketball after Caitlin Clark. She embraced the pressure and thrived in the spotlight, drawing crowds of adoring fans and celebrities to her games at the Galen Center.

However, tragedy struck last weekend when Watkins suffered a season-ending ACL tear, leaving USC fans in shock and the women’s basketball world in disarray. Despite her absence, commercials featuring Watkins continued to air during the NCAA Tournament, highlighting her status as the biggest star in the sport.

With Watkins out, the question arose: who would step up now? This is a familiar scenario in women’s basketball, as star players like Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark have faced injuries or moved on to the WNBA, only to be replaced by a new wave of talent. The game has proven time and again that it can produce captivating players who draw in viewers and elevate the sport to new heights.

While Watkins’ absence is keenly felt, the tournament must go on. The remaining teams, including top seeds like UCLA, South Carolina, UConn, and Texas, are filled with elite talent ready to showcase their skills. Players like Bueckers, Hannah Hidalgo, Flau’Jae Johnson, and Lauren Betts are poised to shine, while new stars are waiting to emerge.

In Spokane and Birmingham, the stage is set for a new chapter in women’s college basketball. Nets will be cut, champions will be crowned, and the legacy of players like JuJu Watkins will continue to shape the future of the sport. The show must go on, and the women’s game will undoubtedly deliver once again.
