Chicago Alderman Anthony Napolitano has expressed his frustration with city officials’ continued efforts to divert funding away from the police department, despite Chicago once again being named the nation’s homicide capital in 2024. With 573 homicides in the city last year, Chicago led the nation in this category for the 13th consecutive year.

Napolitano believes that city officials are ignoring the crime rate in order to demonize the police department and reallocate its budget to other projects. He argues that this approach is detrimental to the city and is destroying the safety and security of Chicago.

One such project that Napolitano criticized is the INVEST South/West initiative, which aimed to revitalize southwest Chicago by attracting businesses to the area. However, Napolitano described the project as an “epic fail,” questioning why resources are not being invested in the overall safety of the city to attract investors on a larger scale.

In addition, Napolitano highlighted the city’s support for illegal migrants as a political move to garner more aid from the federal government. However, he noted that this strategy has not been successful, and Chicago has not received the support it expected.

Furthermore, Napolitano expressed the frustration of his constituents in the 41st Ward, where there is minimal violent criminal activity. As a result, police resources are often redirected to address violent crime in other areas, leaving residents in his ward struggling to receive assistance for minor crimes like burglaries.

Overall, Napolitano criticized the current and previous city administrations for their handling of crime and policing in Chicago, calling them the worst the city has ever seen. He believes that the focus should be on investing in the police force and prioritizing the safety of the entire city.
