The Black Caps dominated Pakistan in the opening ODI in Napier, securing a convincing 73-run victory with a standout performance from Mark Chapman and Daryl Mitchell.

In a remarkable display of batting prowess, the Black Caps posted a formidable total of 344/9 at McLean Park, powered by a record-breaking 199-run partnership between Chapman and Mitchell. Chapman’s explosive knock of 132 was a highlight of the innings.

Despite a shaky start that saw them at 50/3, Chapman and Mitchell united to shift the momentum in their favor with a stellar display of batting. Chapman achieved his highest one-day total, while Mitchell contributed a valuable 75 runs to the cause.

Debutant Muhammad Abbas added the finishing touch with a quick-fire fifty off just 26 balls, capping off an eventful fifty overs in Napier.

Pakistan’s chase started promisingly, reaching 83 before losing their first wicket to Nathan Smith. Usman Khan’s brisk 39 set the tone for the innings, but Pakistan’s lower order collapse derailed their hopes of a successful chase.

New Zealand’s bowlers capitalized on the pressure, with Will O’Rourke claiming the crucial wicket of Babar Azam for 78. The tail-enders faltered under the mounting run rate, unable to support Salman Agha effectively as Pakistan fell short of the target.

Nathan Smith’s impressive figures of 4/60 epitomized New Zealand’s dominant bowling performance, sealing a comprehensive win in the series opener.
