The Great Mughals: Art, Architecture, and Opulence exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Indian subcontinent during the reign of the Mughal emperors. Curated by Susan Stronge, the exhibition showcases over 200 objects that highlight the artistic splendor and opulence of the Mughal empire from 1560 to 1660.

The Mughals, often misunderstood as Muslim invaders by British colonial Indology and contemporary far-right Indian politics, actually embraced a syncretic culture that assimilated Hindu and Indic aesthetic features. Manuscripts on display at the exhibition depict stories from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and feature mythological figures from both Iranian and Hindu folklore. This vibrant cosmopolitanism is evident in the exquisite craftsmanship of the artifacts on display.

From illustrated manuscripts to finely woven textiles, intricately cut gemstones, and everyday objects like brass eating wares and wooden chests of drawers, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the sheer wealth and cultural innovation of the Mughal empire. The Mughals were not only patrons of art and architecture but also embraced influences from different spheres, such as Persianate culture, European techniques like enameling, and Chinese designs and materials like porcelain.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the Taj Mahal, commissioned by Shah Jahan and considered a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. The exhibition also features exquisite creations like a nephrite jade wine cup made for Shah Jahan, showcasing a blend of Chinese, Hindu, and European motifs. The legacy of the Mughals’ cultural innovation and artistry continues to inspire and awe visitors to this day.

The exhibition draws to a close with a juxtaposition of elite and mundane craftsmanship, symbolizing the cosmopolitan culture that thrived across the Mughal empire. Despite the empire’s eventual decline due to various factors, its legacy of artistic excellence and cultural diversity endures. The Great Mughals exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum is a celebration of the enduring legacy of one of the most fascinating periods in Indian history.

For those interested in exploring the art, architecture, and opulence of the Mughal era, The Great Mughals exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum is a must-visit. The exhibition runs until May 5 and offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich cultural heritage of the Mughal empire under the reign of Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan.
