In a curious display of political detachment, Republicans and former President Trump appear to be brushing aside the mounting evidence of public discontent with their administration.

Frustrated constituents are voicing their dissatisfaction at town hall meetings, openly mocking Republican assertions of economic improvement, and expressing their displeasure towards their representatives.

During his campaign, Trump emphasized that immigration took precedence over economic issues, seemingly turning a blind eye to escalating costs and inflation—a strategic oversight that may soon come back to haunt him.

Recent polling data reveals a troubling trend for Trump and his party: voter dissatisfaction with the economy is proving to be a significant liability.

The latest survey from CBS News highlights the stark contrast between initial expectations and current realities:

Trump initially won the 2024 election largely by promising to enhance the economic wellbeing of Americans.

Right before he took office, a notable 40% of the populace predicted his policies would lead to financial improvement.

Fast forward to today, and only 25% of Americans feel those same policies are beneficial, while nearly twice that number believe they are worse off.

Before Trump assumed office, the net sentiment was favorable (+14 margin); now, it has flipped dramatically, with a net (-19) believing he will worsen their financial situation. This represents a staggering 33-point swing in just a few months. Currently, 77% of Americans think Trump’s policies will either harm their finances (42%) or leave them unchanged (35%), while a mere 23% hold out hope for improvement.

Additionally, 72% of Americans believe Trump’s tariffs will lead to higher prices, and 64% feel he isn’t doing enough to alleviate financial burdens.

While a larger number of Americans still attribute inflation to Biden, the gap is narrowing, now sitting at 38%-34%.

It seems likely that in the coming months, Trump will find himself fully accountable for the rising inflation—an economic albatross that could accelerate his declining popularity.
