Kohl’s Corp: A Closer Look

Summary

Based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Kohl’s Corp. is a retail giant with a strong presence in the United States. With 1,175 stores spread across 49 states, Kohl’s is a go-to destination for middle-income customers looking to shop for their families and homes.

In a recent announcement, Kohl’s revealed plans to close 27 underperforming stores in the first quarter of calendar 2025. Despite this, the company remains a powerhouse in the retail industry, with sales reaching $15.4 billion in the fiscal year 2025.

Kohl’s stores are strategically located in various settings, including strip centers, freestanding locations, and community and regional malls. This diverse footprint allows the company to reach a wide range of customers and cater to their unique shopping needs.

Women’s clothing accounts for about 25% of Kohl’s sales, making it a significant revenue driver for the company. Menswear follows closely behind, contributing approximately 20% to overall sales. Additionally, products for the home play a crucial role, generating 15% of total revenue.

One of Kohl’s key strengths lies in its private and exclusive brands, which make up 31% of sales. These brands are specifically tailored for Kohl’s customers, offering them unique and high-quality products that can’t be found elsewhere. This focus on proprietary brands has been a successful strategy for Kohl’s, with the percentage of sales from these brands increasing from 25% in FY04.

Overall, Kohl’s Corp. continues to be a powerhouse in the retail industry, serving a diverse customer base and staying ahead of the competition with its strategic focus on private brands and unique product offerings.
