A San Francisco sex worker, Leniyah Butler, has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the shooting of her customer, Hamza Walupupu, after he demanded a refund upon discovering she was transgender. The incident took place in November 2023 when Walupupu picked up Butler in the Tenderloin District, seeking her services. The pair then drove to Crissy Field, where Butler revealed her transgender identity after performing a sex act, leading to an argument and ultimately Butler shooting Walupupu in the eye.

Butler then stole Walupupu’s car and attempted to cover up the crime by disposing of his belongings, wiping down the car, and giving the murder weapon to an unnamed individual. Following a raid on her home by FBI agents, Butler attempted to flee but was apprehended and now faces up to 15 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter.

While Butler was acquitted of second-degree murder, the jury found her guilty of the lesser charge. The victim’s family expressed their condolences and hope that the verdict will bring some measure of justice for Walupupu. The sentencing for Butler is scheduled for June 27, where she will learn the consequences of her actions.

The case highlights the complexities and risks faced by sex workers, as well as the importance of transparency and respect in all interactions. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of violence and the impact it has on individuals and their loved ones.
