The New York Yankees made history with a franchise-record nine-home run day against the Milwaukee Brewers, but it was the discussion about the bats used by some players that stole the spotlight. These uniquely shaped bats are the result of two years of research and experimentation led by a former Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist-turned-coach, Aaron Leanhardt.

Leanhardt, 48, began his work in the Yankees’ minor-league hitting department in 2022 and brought it to the major leagues last season as the team’s lead analyst. The bats, with their torpedo-like shape, are custom-made to player preferences, designed to have the densest part of the bat where the hitter most often makes contact with the baseball.

According to Leanhardt, the goal of the new bat design is to increase the amount of wood and mass where the hitter makes contact, ultimately leading to more successful hits. The bats do not break any MLB rules, as they fall within the guidelines outlined in Rule 3.02 regarding bat specifications.

While Leanhardt credits the collaborative effort of coaches, players, MLB, and bat makers for the invention of the technology, he has been recognized by retired infielder Kevin Smith and others as the primary inventor. Leanhardt’s background in electrical engineering and physics, combined with his coaching experience, has allowed him to innovate in the field of baseball equipment.

The bats have gained traction among Yankees players, with as many as five using them in games early this season. Leanhardt’s goal with the new bat design is to help players make more contact with pitches and strike the ball more often with the bat’s sweet spot. By redistributing the weight of the bat, players can potentially increase bat speed and improve performance without sacrificing other aspects of their game.

Leanhardt’s unconventional journey from academia to baseball has led to groundbreaking advancements in bat technology. He emphasizes the importance of pushing the envelope and finding innovative ways to improve player performance. The bats have generated excitement on social media and within the baseball industry, leading to increased interest and adoption among players.

Overall, Leanhardt’s dedication to research and collaboration has resulted in a game-changing development in baseball equipment. The success of the new bat design is a testament to the power of innovation and forward-thinking in the world of sports.
