Democrats were searching for an economic message. Then came Trump’s tariffs.

The Democratic Party, still grappling with its strategy in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tenure, is honing in on a message for the midterms: Trump, with the unwavering support of congressional Republicans, is steering the economy toward disaster.

This week saw global financial markets take a nosedive after Trump imposed sweeping tariffs on foreign trading partners, a move that even seasoned economists have criticized as illogical. Investors felt the impact sharply, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average continuing its downward spiral on Friday following significant losses the previous day.

In the aftermath of losing the White House last November, Democrats have struggled to present a unified front. However, lawmakers and strategists believe that Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” presents an opportunity to challenge the president on what has typically been his hallmark: the economy.

Seizing on the repercussions of Trump’s economic policies—and the apparent inaction from Republican lawmakers—Democrats plan to leverage this economic turmoil to galvanize their base in anticipation of next year’s midterm elections.

“The party needs to scream from the rooftops about these issues,” said Alejandro Verdin, a Democratic strategist based in Chicago, regarding the need for a robust response to Trump’s economic maneuvers.

This push comes at a time when early indicators suggest a more favorable midterm climate for Democrats. Recently, Democratic-backed Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Susan Crawford decisively defeated her Trump-endorsed rival, maintaining the court’s liberal majority. Moreover, despite losing both contests, Democrats performed surprisingly well in two heavily Republican Florida House districts.

Democrats aim to extend their anti-tariff narrative to encompass congressional Republicans—who, for the moment, have shown no inclination to challenge Trump from their positions on Capitol Hill—highlighting what they term as complacency while the president wreaks havoc on the American economy and global trade.

“Every House and Senate Republican supporting this reckless and unnecessary trade war needs to be held accountable for the suffering they are intentionally causing the American people,” declared House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Thursday.

In response, Republicans have brushed off concerns that the early economic turmoil stemming from the tariffs will have lasting implications over the next 18 months. They assert that Democrats’ alarmism over the tariffs is misguided, claiming that the president’s economic policies reflect a commitment to American workers.

“Once upon a time, Democrats championed the American worker—now, they seem to be aligned with Beijing. President Trump and Republicans are dedicated to prioritizing American jobs,” argued Emily Tuttle, spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Yet, Democratic strategists foresee that just a week into Trump’s new economic regime, the fallout could weaken Republicans on their traditional stronghold: the economy. This is particularly noteworthy given that the GOP has historically used economic issues to criticize Democrats.

“Democrats now have the chance to tell voters that Republicans have deceived them,” said Matt McDermott, a Democratic pollster and senior vice president at Whitman Insight Strategies. “They promised to lower prices, but the reality has been the opposite. It’s time for a change.”

Trump has long touted economic strength as a core part of his political identity, vowing during his 2024 campaign to revitalize the economy while attacking Democratic opponents for rising grocery prices during their administration.

However, tariffs may represent a potential vulnerability for him. A recent Marquette Law School poll conducted in March found that 58 percent of respondents believed tariffs would harm the U.S. economy. On the flip side, Democrats are also facing challenges, with 62 percent of respondents expressing an unfavorable view of the party.

Yasmin Radjy, executive director of the progressive organizing group Swing Left, emphasized that their organization intends to ensure “electoral consequences” for congressional Republicans who simply endorse Trump’s “dangerous economic agenda.”

“While Trump destabilizes the economy, congressional Republicans are merely spectators,” Radjy noted. “From our perspective, that’s both unacceptable and crucial to highlight.”

Democrats believe they have an opening in key battleground states to present a viable alternative vision.

“This crisis will affect everyone, especially working families,” stated Lauren Chou, a spokesperson for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which concentrates on state-level races. “Costs are set to rise, but Democrats are actively working to mitigate the impending disaster through legislation aimed at easing the burden on working families, whereas Republicans have chosen to ignore the issue.”

Chou attributed recent Democratic successes in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Iowa to their focus on addressing the concerns that voters prioritize.

Nevertheless, Democratic strategists caution that the party must develop a proactive economic message beyond merely attacking Trump—especially considering that voters have shown a willingness to overlook past missteps and reelect him in 2024.

“It can’t just be about chaos; we need to provide real solutions,” Verdin concluded.
