When Paolina Russo and Lucile Guilmard crossed paths through a studio-share arrangement, little did they know that their Central Saint Martins education and prestigious internships would lead them to the forefront of London’s fashion scene. Launching their label in 2021, the duo quickly made waves by securing high-profile showcases, including being semifinalists for the LVMH Prize, finalists for the Woolmark Prize, and participants in 1 Granary’s mentorship program.
During a recent Zoom interview, Russo discussed their approach, stating, “We’re very solutions-focused women.” Fresh off successful launches at Dover Street Market in London and a tour across Asia, including appearances at ComplexCon in Hong Kong and Seoul, the duo is gaining recognition for their unique vision.
Their latest collection, titled The Ballad of Ramona Boulevard, is a modern suburban fable brought to life through warrior princesses draped in protective purple hues. Drawing inspiration from medieval elements, corsetry techniques, and 2010s Tumblr aesthetics, the collection reflects a need for armor in tumultuous times.
Knitwear is a standout feature of Russo Guilmard’s designs, with traditional techniques reimagined in innovative ways. From cable knits transformed into corset shapes to lenticular prints on illusion knits, the craftsmanship is evident in every piece. Gold foil-burnished fabrics, denims with heraldic references, and lightweight tulle prints adorned with whimsical motifs add depth to the collection.
Collaborations are at the core of the brand’s ethos, with partnerships ranging from hand-sprayed, laser-etched jeans produced in Portugal to a collaboration with Converse for unique footwear designs. Embracing artisanal integrity, the designers even ventured into the digital realm, creating virtual avatars for Roblox that mirrored their meticulous handwork.
“We want to inspire people to connect with the process behind the design,” Russo emphasized, highlighting the brand’s commitment to transparency and creativity.
