Chile’s Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, is aiming to ramp up its output to 1.39 million metric tons this year, according to CEO Ruben Alvarado. This goal represents the upper end of the company’s estimated range for 2024. Alvarado shared this optimistic outlook during the CRU/CESCO World Copper Conference in Santiago.

After experiencing production lows in 2023 due to project delays and operational challenges, Codelco managed to bounce back in 2024. Alvarado expressed confidence in the company’s ability to continue this upward trend, citing a stronger first quarter performance compared to the previous year.

“We’re preparing to go for significantly more this year,” Alvarado stated. He emphasized the importance of operational excellence and safety in achieving this target, highlighting Codelco’s commitment to maintaining high standards in its operations.

In addition to focusing on production growth, Codelco is also considering a return to the bond market for financing its projects. Alvarado mentioned that the company’s bond prices are attractive, and they are carefully evaluating the timing for this move.

Furthermore, Codelco is evaluating the possibility of sending new spot copper shipments to the U.S. to meet the needs of long-term customers. This strategy was implemented in the first quarter as customers sought to secure supply ahead of anticipated U.S. tariffs on imports.

As Codelco continues to navigate market dynamics and operational challenges, Alvarado remains optimistic about the company’s prospects for the year ahead. With a focus on efficiency, safety, and strategic decision-making, Codelco is poised to maintain its position as a leading player in the global copper market.
