After years of legal battles, Connecticut’s highest court has upheld a ruling that orders conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to pay approximately $1 billion in defamation damages to the families of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. Jones had spent years spreading false claims that the tragedy was fake.

The state’s Supreme Court issued a brief ruling denying Jones’ appeal to challenge the previous decision. This decision comes after a jury in Waterbury, Connecticut, awarded nearly $1 billion in damages to the families affected by the shooting, which resulted in the deaths of 20 children and six adults.

During the trial, the families recounted how Jones used his platform, Infowars, to torment them by labeling them as “crisis actors” and asserting that the shooting was a hoax. One mother, Nicole Hockley, shared how she received disturbing images of deceased children while grieving for her own son, Dylan, who was killed in the shooting.

Mark and Jackie Barden, parents of 6-year-old victim Daniel, revealed they received threatening letters, including one claiming to have desecrated their son’s grave. Despite the emotional distress caused by Jones’ actions, traffic to Infowars spiked whenever he discussed the shooting.

In addition to the Connecticut case, Jones was also ordered to pay $45 million to two parents in Texas whose child died in the same shooting. Despite the mounting legal judgments, Jones has attempted to evade payment by filing for bankruptcy and appealing the rulings.

With the latest ruling, Jones is one step closer to being held accountable for the harm he caused to the Sandy Hook families. Attorney Alinor Sterling, representing some of the families, expressed hope that the decision would pave the way for them to pursue collections against Jones.

While Jones’ attorney, Norm Pattis, expressed disappointment in the ruling, he indicated a willingness to seek further appeal at the Supreme Court level. The legal battle continues as Jones faces the consequences of his actions in spreading harmful misinformation.
