Northwestern University researchers have developed a groundbreaking wearable device that can measure gases emitted from and absorbed by the skin. This innovative technology offers a new approach to assessing skin health by analyzing gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and volatile organic compounds. By monitoring these gases, the device can provide valuable insights into various skin conditions, wound healing, skin infections, hydration levels, and exposure to environmental chemicals.

The device, featured in a study published in the journal Nature, consists of sensors that accurately measure changes in gas concentrations without direct contact with the skin. This non-contact design is particularly beneficial for monitoring fragile skin without causing any disturbance to delicate tissues. The device’s small chamber hovers above the skin, allowing gases to flow in and out for analysis.

One of the key advantages of this wearable device is its ability to monitor skin health remotely, empowering both healthcare professionals and individuals to track skin conditions in real-time.
