A groundbreaking study conducted by a team at Oklahoma State University (OSU) and published in Prehospital and Disaster Medicine focused on analyzing the biological impact of trauma on survivors of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

The Oklahoma City bombing, orchestrated by domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh, remains one of the deadliest attacks in US history, resulting in the deaths of 167 people and injuring 684 others. The study sought to understand how trauma from such a catastrophic event could affect the bodies of survivors, even after three decades.

The research team examined three key bodily systems: cortisol levels, blood pressure and heart rate, and inflammatory substances known as interleukins. Surprisingly, the results revealed significant differences between the survivors and a control group of local residents unaffected by the bombing. While cortisol levels were lower in many survivors, they exhibited higher blood pressure and lower heart rates in response to trauma cues. Additionally, interleukin levels associated with inflammation were elevated, while levels responsible for immuno-protection were lower.

Lead author of the study, Phebe Tucker, emphasized the lasting imprint of trauma on the body, stating that while the mind may be resilient, the body retains the memory of traumatic events. The study did not find a direct correlation between the biological markers and psychological symptoms such as PTSD and depression, suggesting a disconnect between the physiological and emotional responses to trauma.

Rachel Zettl, a co-author of the study, highlighted the profound impact of trauma on the body, stating that it goes beyond affecting the mind and alters the individual’s physical being. The findings raise concerns about potential long-term health implications for trauma survivors, as changes in baseline biological levels could lead to health problems down the line.
