A man from Denver has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty of the murder of his 24-year-old wife, as confirmed by a news release from the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Jonathan Nuno-Mijangos was sentenced by Judge Ericka Englert for the death of Jasmin Cigarroa.

Nuno-Mijangos was convicted of first-degree murder, assault in the first degree, tampering with a dead body, and abuse of a corpse by a jury earlier this week.

The body of Cigarroa was discovered near a road in rural Adams County in March 2021, with investigators determining that she had been strangled.

“Jasmin Cigarroa was a hard-working, intelligent, and loving woman whose untimely death at the hands of her husband was a tragic loss,” said Denver District Attorney Beth McCann. “I hope that this verdict brings some solace to Jasmin’s loved ones. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against domestic violence in our community.”

Nuno-Mijangos had a history of domestic violence, with a previous charge of second-degree assault in 2019.

On the morning of March 9, 2021, Cigarroa, who worked from home, logged onto her work computer but never logged off. A neighbor reported hearing a loud noise coming from the couple’s apartment that morning.

The following day, Nuno-Mijangos reported his wife missing, claiming he was late for work due to car trouble the day before. Cigarroa’s body was discovered on March 12, 2021.

Cellphone records were used by investigators to track Nuno-Mijangos’ movements, placing him near the location where the body was found. Initially denying leaving his residence that day, Nuno-Mijangos later admitted to driving to the area at midnight and returning home.
