Sir Michael Hill, 86, has revealed his decision to step down from his role at Michael Hill Jeweller Ltd as he embarks on cancer treatment. In his absence, Andrea Slingsby will serve as an alternative director.
The renowned jeweller resides with his wife, Christine, at The Hills golf resort in Arrowtown, where they enjoy hosting the NZ Open golf tournament. Sir Michael’s journey in the jewellery industry began in 1979 when he opened his first store in WhangÄrei at the age of 40. This venture followed years of experience working in his uncle’s jewellery store.
Today, the Michael Hill chain boasts an impressive 291 stores across New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. Despite his success in the jewellery business, Sir Michael revealed to news.com.au in 2019 that his initial passion lay in becoming a classical concert violinist. However, familial pressures led him to pursue a different career path.
His love for music continues to be evident through his involvement in the Whakatipu Music Festival, an extension of the Michael Hill International Violin Competition held in Queenstown. Sir Michael’s journey began as a watchmaker before transitioning into sales, where he met his future wife, Christine, in the store.
Michael Hill Jeweller Ltd made significant strides in 2016 by listing shares on both the ASX and NZX, solidifying its position in the market.
