An intoxicated drag racer, Marvin Bonilla, is facing charges after a tragic crash that resulted in the death of a driver in June 2023. According to officials, Bonilla was speeding at 102 mph and had a blood alcohol content of .13 when he crashed his Ford Mustang into a Toyota RAV4 driven by 51-year-old Alberto Onofre at the intersection of 59th and Pulaski.

The impact of the crash was so severe that it nearly split the Toyota in two, as described in the police report. Despite initially fleeing the scene, Bonilla called 911 three times for help and was later taken to Christ Hospital for treatment. DNA evidence found at the scene confirmed that Bonilla was behind the wheel of the Mustang during the crash.

Recently, Bonilla surrendered to authorities upon learning that they were searching for him in connection with the incident. He has been charged with reckless homicide by motor vehicle and aggravated DUI causing death. However, Judge John Hock denied the state’s request to keep Bonilla in jail pending trial.

The tragic consequences of Bonilla’s reckless actions serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and engaging in illegal street racing. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Alberto Onofre during this difficult time.
