Lehuauakea, a talented Kanaka Maoli artist and practitioner of kapa, or Native Hawaiian bark clothmaking, has dedicated their life to reviving this traditional art form that was nearly lost due to the illegal annexation of Hawaii by the United States in the early 1900s. Their journey began when they moved away from home to Oregon during high school and felt a deep calling to reclaim and honor their cultural heritage.

Today, Lehuauakea splits their time between Santa Fe and the Island of Hawaiʻi, where they grew up, gathering, soaking, and beating tree bark, typically from the wauke or paper mulberry tree, to create stunning pieces of kapa. They use natural pigments to dye the cloth and create large-scale installations, textiles, and experimental mixed-media works that showcase the beauty and significance of this traditional art form.

Recently, Lehuauakea received the prestigious Walker Youngbird Foundation grant, a $15,000 award for emerging Native American artists. This grant will not only support their artistic practice but also prepare them for a solo exhibition at Nunu Fine Art in New York City in 2026. It is a well-deserved recognition of their talent and dedication to preserving and evolving Native Hawaiian art traditions.

As one of the few kapa practitioners under the age of 30, Lehuauakea’s work is truly groundbreaking. Their integration of ancestral tradition, environmental stewardship, and themes of queer Indigenous identity has been praised for its innovative approach to preserving cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.

In addition to their work in kapa, Lehuauakea also incorporates textiles that honor their Japanese heritage, reflecting the history of Japanese immigrants who came to Hawaiʻi to work on sugar and pineapple plantations. This blending of cultural influences adds depth and richness to their art, creating a unique and powerful narrative that speaks to the complexities of identity and history.

One of Lehuauakea’s recent installations, “Still Finding My Way Back Home,” beautifully combines Calrose Rice bags, kapa, Japanese silk, kimono fabrics, and cotton to create a quilt-like work that celebrates their cultural heritage and family history. Through their art, Lehuauakea explores themes of assimilation, erasure, and the resilience of Indigenous communities, creating a powerful and thought-provoking visual experience.

Looking ahead to their upcoming exhibition in New York, Lehuauakea is grateful for the support and opportunity to share their work with a wider audience. They hope to represent their community well and inspire other Native Hawaiian artists to step into the spotlight and share their stories with the world.

In conclusion, Lehuauakea’s work is a testament to the power of art to preserve and evolve cultural traditions, to celebrate diversity and heritage, and to create a bridge between the past and the future. Their unique perspective and innovative approach make them a rising star in the world of contemporary Native American art, and we look forward to seeing where their artistic journey takes them next. The advancement of technology has brought about a significant change in the way we live our lives. From the way we communicate to the way we work, technology has revolutionized every aspect of our daily routine. One of the most prominent changes that technology has brought about is in the field of healthcare.

With the advent of new technologies, healthcare has evolved to become more efficient, accurate, and accessible. In the past, patients had to physically visit a doctor’s office to receive medical advice and treatment. However, with the development of telemedicine, patients can now consult with healthcare professionals remotely through video calls or messaging platforms. This has not only made healthcare more convenient for patients but has also helped to reduce the burden on healthcare facilities.

Furthermore, the introduction of electronic health records (EHRs) has made it easier for healthcare providers to access and share patient information. This has improved the coordination of care between different healthcare professionals and has led to better outcomes for patients. Additionally, EHRs have also enabled the use of data analytics to identify trends and patterns in patient populations, allowing for more personalized and effective treatment plans.

Another significant advancement in healthcare technology is the development of medical devices and equipment. From advanced imaging machines to robotic surgery systems, these technologies have improved the accuracy and precision of medical procedures. For example, robotic surgery systems allow surgeons to perform complex surgeries with greater precision and control, leading to faster recovery times and fewer complications for patients.

Moreover, the use of wearable devices and mobile health apps has enabled individuals to monitor their health in real-time. These devices can track vital signs, physical activity, and even detect abnormalities in health conditions. This has empowered individuals to take control of their own health and make informed decisions about their well-being.

Overall, the advancement of technology in healthcare has transformed the way we approach medical care. From telemedicine to electronic health records to medical devices, technology has made healthcare more efficient, accurate, and accessible. As technology continues to evolve, we can expect even more innovations that will further improve the quality of healthcare for individuals around the world.
