Convicted killer Kathan Guzman, who was mistakenly released from a Georgia prison, has been recaptured by US Marshals in Florida after a two-week manhunt. The 22-year-old, serving a life sentence for strangling his girlfriend to death, was found hiding at his mother’s home in Ocoee.

US Marshals deputy commander Michael Sonethavilay stated that their Atlanta division conducted a thorough investigation, leading them to Florida where they collaborated with local authorities to apprehend Guzman. The fugitive, who had only served five months of his sentence, was released from Clayton County Jail in Jonesboro on March 27 due to a training failure and oversight by jail staff.

Guzman had been sentenced in October 2024 after confessing to the murder of 19-year-old Delia Grayson, who was found dead in a bathtub in August 2022. The jail mistakenly released him after misinterpreting a court document related to a necrophilia charge that was not pursued at trial, overlooking his conviction for murder and assault by strangulation.

Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley expressed disappointment over the error, noting that all necessary paperwork had been submitted promptly. The mistake left the victim’s mother, Christina Grayson, living in fear for her safety and the public’s. Now that Guzman is back in custody, Grayson feels a sense of relief.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of Guzman’s release, with potential disciplinary actions pending within the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. Guzman is currently held at Orange County Jail awaiting extradition. The incident has raised concerns about the oversight and procedures within the criminal justice system.

The sheriff’s office has faced criticism for the oversight, with Guzman reportedly attributing his release to a higher power while enjoying his unintended freedom. The community is relieved that Guzman is back in custody, but questions remain about the system failures that led to his temporary escape. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and thoroughness in handling dangerous criminals within the justice system.
