The impact of smartphones on our daily lives is undeniable. As the Mobile Editor at Tech Advisor, my job requires me to be constantly connected to my phone. While smartphones offer a multitude of benefits, they also come with downsides that are hard to ignore. Most of the time, I find myself using my phone as a form of distraction rather than utilizing its useful features.

Realizing the need for a change, I decided to challenge myself by going a week without using a smartphone. Instead, I opted for a basic feature phone, the Nokia 110, which offered minimal functionality compared to a smartphone. Despite missing out on apps like Chrome, WhatsApp, and Google Maps, I was oddly excited to make the switch.

The first day of my smartphone-free week was met with discomfort as I grappled with using a laptop for tasks that were easier on a smartphone. I had to block distracting websites to stay focused. However, the call quality on the basic phone during a conversation with my grandma was surprisingly good, proving that basic phones still serve their purpose.

Visiting my parents without a smartphone was a breeze, except for missing out on capturing moments with a better camera. The day passed without the usual distractions of social media, with no missed messages to fret over. As I called a friend in Malaysia using WhatsApp on a laptop, I realized that some tasks were still manageable without a smartphone.

Navigating to unfamiliar locations without Google Maps proved challenging, but signs and route checking saved the day. Embracing simple tasks like using a paper shopping list and physical loyalty cards felt refreshing. The lack of distractions led to moments of calm and focus, especially during a massage and journalling session.

By mid-week, I found myself decluttering and enjoying screen-free time at home with ease. I struggled with boredom on the laptop without social media or YouTube videos. As the week progressed, not using a smartphone felt normal, and I navigated daily tasks like finding a coffee shop and using a physical cinema ticket without issues.

On the last day of the experiment, I reluctantly switched back to my smartphone, realizing the impact of constant distractions on my mental state. The experience taught me the importance of reducing distractions and being present in the moment. While I don’t plan to give up my smartphone entirely, I aim to find a balance that allows me to reap the benefits without succumbing to mindless usage.

The week without a smartphone was a valuable lesson in mindfulness and conscious usage of technology. It highlighted the need to disconnect from constant distractions and focus on the present moment. As I reflect on the experience, I am motivated to find a middle ground that allows me to enjoy the benefits of technology without being consumed by it.
