The shooting of a 15-year-old during a “teen takeover” in Streeterville on March 28 has led to charges being filed against a 14-year-old accused gunman. The incident took place in the 400 block of North Cityfront Plaza, outside the NBC Tower, as large groups of young people flooded the neighborhood.
While details about the accused boy and the specifics of the incident have been limited due to the case being in juvenile court, it is known that the shooting occurred around 9:41 p.m. CPD officers responded to shots fired and witnessed a large group of individuals fleeing the scene. Video footage captured from a nearby high-rise building showed numerous people running from behind NBC Tower onto Columbus Drive and North Water Street following the shooting.
The victim, a 15-year-old boy, sustained a graze wound to his leg and was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition. A single shell casing was recovered at the corner of Columbus and North Water, across from the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk Hotel.
The 14-year-old suspect is facing charges of aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon in connection with the incident.
In response to this incident and a previous shooting involving a tourist in March, the City Council is considering an ordinance that would grant Chicago police supervisors the authority to implement an early curfew for minors to prevent future takeovers.
