Terrance McGraw (Chicago Police Department, CWBChicago)

Man Attempts to Rob CTA Passenger in Wrigleyville

A man identified as Terrance McGraw, aged 24, was arrested for attempting to rob a CTA passenger of their phone in Wrigleyville. The incident occurred on April 8 at around 5 p.m. on a Red Line train near Addison. McGraw, who was on pretrial release for criminal damage, allegedly tried to punch the 45-year-old passenger and demanded their phone.

According to a criminal complaint, McGraw stood over the victim and aggressively ordered them to hand over their phone. When the victim resisted, McGraw attempted to snatch the device from their hand. The failed robbery attempt led McGraw to run to the back of the train, where he proceeded to kick out the rear train window in a fit of rage.

Fortuitously, Chicago Police Department officers were conducting a security check at the Addison station platform at the time the incident took place. Several witnesses alerted the officers to the disturbance on the train, leading to McGraw’s apprehension on the platform. The victim positively identified McGraw as the assailant.

Upon being questioned by the police, McGraw allegedly justified his actions by claiming that someone had stolen his phone and that he needed another one. In addition to the attempted robbery charge, McGraw also faces a felony criminal damage charge for the destruction of the train window, estimated at $3,433.89.

Judge John Hock ordered McGraw to be detained pending trial.
