The Detroit Red Wings concluded their season with a disappointing loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, squandering a 3-1 lead at Scotiabank Arena. As the offseason approaches, speculation arises about potential roster changes for the 2025-26 NHL season. Here are the five Detroit Red Wings players who may not be returning next season:

  1. Cam Talbot
The Red Wings signed Cam Talbot in the hopes of acquiring a reliable starting goaltender. While the 37-year-old performed well overall, providing a veteran presence in net, he may not be a long-term solution. With Petr Mrazek not meeting the team’s needs, Detroit could be in the market for a new starting goalie, making Talbot expendable despite having one more year on his contract at $2.5 million.

  2. Jeff Petry
Veteran defenseman Jeff Petry will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Given his limited role and modest production of eight points in 44 games, the 37-year-old may seek opportunities with other teams for the upcoming season.

  3. Justin Holl
Justin Holl started the season in the AHL but returned to the NHL due to injuries and inconsistencies on the blue line. However, his performance was more of a liability than an asset for the Red Wings. With one more year on his contract at $3.4 million and a modified no-trade clause, moving Holl could be challenging but not impossible if a suitable trade partner emerges.

  4. Vladimir Tarasenko
The signing of Vladimir Tarasenko aimed to add a top-six winger who could contribute consistently on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, his output of just 11 goals in 80 games fell short of expectations, especially given his $4.75 million price tag. With a modified no-trade clause, the Red Wings might explore options to move the Russian forward during the offseason.

  5. Patrick Kane
Despite a strong season with 21 goals and 59 points in 72 games, the 36-year-old Patrick Kane faces uncertainty as an unrestricted free agent. While there are no indications of retirement, Kane’s decision could impact the Red Wings’ plans. If he continues playing, Detroit may look to re-sign him, but if Kane chooses to retire, the team will be in the market for another top-six winger.

As the offseason unfolds, the Detroit Red Wings will navigate potential roster changes to enhance their performance in the upcoming NHL season. Stay tuned for updates as the team prepares for the 2025-26 campaign.
