Amazon has officially pulled the plug on the comedy series “Clean Slate” after just one season, according to a report from Variety. The show, which originally premiered on Prime Video in February, featured a star-studded cast including Laverne Cox, George Wallace, Jay Wilkison, D.K. Uzoukwu, Telma Hopkins, Philip Garcia, and Norah Murphy. Notably, “Clean Slate” marks the final completed series produced by the iconic Norman Lear before his passing in 2023.

The premise of the show revolves around Harry Slate, portrayed by George Wallace, a traditional and outspoken car wash owner from Alabama who is forced to confront his own beliefs when his estranged child, who he thought was a son, returns home as a proud transgender woman named Desiree, played by Laverne Cox.

The series was co-created by Wallace and Cox, along with Dan Ewen, and all three also served as executive producers alongside Norman Lear, Brent Miller, and Simran Baidwan. The show was a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

“Clean Slate” had a somewhat tumultuous journey to the small screen, initially being developed at Peacock in 2020 before ultimately landing at Amazon’s IMDB TV, which later rebranded as Freevee. After being picked up to series in 2022, the show was then shifted to Prime Video following the closure of Freevee by Amazon.

Despite its cancellation, “Clean Slate” received praise from critics, holding an impressive 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In a review for Variety, Aramide Tinubu commended the show for its portrayal of the transgender experience, stating, “‘Clean Slate’ isn’t perfect, but it showcases the transgender experience with beautiful humanity. While Harry doesn’t always understand Desiree’s perspective, he extends his hands toward her even in his most stubborn moments.”

The news of the cancellation was first reported by Deadline, leaving fans disappointed by the premature end of the series. It remains to be seen whether “Clean Slate” will find a new home or if this marks the end of the road for the thought-provoking comedy.
