In a surprising admission, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) vice chair David Hogg has thrown a wrench into the usual rhetoric surrounding democracy, candidly expressing his discontent in a recent CBS News interview.
The 25-year-old, who gained prominence as an advocate for gun control following the tragic Parkland shooting, has now characterized democracy as a significant contributor to the challenges facing America today.
Hogg elaborated:
As Democrats, we frequently proclaim that democracy is of utmost importance. We must defend it.
Yet, we fail to recognize that for our generation, democracy has subjected us to school shooter drills and actual shootings. It has contributed to the climate crisis and much more.
Our task is to demonstrate that democracy truly matters by confronting the special interests undermining the American dream, which in turn erodes the faith of our youth—not just in our party but in the country’s future. This is our mission.
Hogg: “We go out there all the time as Democrats and say ‘democracy is the most important thing’… Democracy is what put us through school shooter drills and school shootings. It’s what’s put us through the climate crisis.”pic.twitter.com/eZZmcFN0M4

Hogg’s remarks resonate with a growing sentiment among many Democrats: that democracy is not delivering the results they desire. After all, the 2024 elections saw not only Donald Trump reclaiming the presidency but also Republicans securing a majority in both the Senate and House, granting them the authority to implement their legislative agenda.
This commentary follows Hogg’s announcement of a $20 million initiative aimed at bolstering primary challenges to older, less dynamic Democratic incumbents. He stated in an interview with Politico:
We have entrenched seniority politics creating a litmus test for who deserves to be in power.
What we need are individuals, regardless of age, who are ready to fight.

Such bold plans have sent ripples through the Democratic establishment, with former Clinton advisor James Carville referring to Hogg as a “contemptible little twerp.” In contrast, DNC Chair Ken Martin asserted that it is ultimately up to primary voters to choose candidates for the general elections.
Nonetheless, Martin acknowledged Hogg’s enthusiasm and commitment to the party, stating, “David Hogg is a passionate advocate, and we appreciate his contributions to the Democratic Party, both in his role as DNC vice chair and beyond.”
