Despite a valiant effort in the first half, where they were only trailing by three points at halftime, the Highlanders were overpowered in a brutal third quarter by the Chiefs. Damian McKenzie and his backline showcased their skills, while the Chiefs’ forwards, both starting and from the bench, wreaked havoc on the field.
Although there were standout performances from players like Folau Fakatava, Fabian Holland, and Veveni Lasaqa, the Highlanders struggled to maintain their momentum and conceded four tries in just 13 minutes after halftime.
The Chiefs displayed their dominance throughout the match, with McKenzie leading the charge and players like Xavier Roe, Emoni Narawa, Shaun Stevenson, and Tupou Vaa’i making significant contributions. Despite their strong performance, the Chiefs were unable to build a substantial lead until the second half.
The Highlanders managed to level the scores with a well-executed play that led to a try by prop Sefo Kautai. However, the Chiefs quickly regained control, scoring three more tries in rapid succession.
The Highlanders suffered a setback with a late injury to star prop Ethan de Groot and will now face the Crusaders at home next Saturday.
