A shocking case of theft has been uncovered in Glenwood, where a suburban woman allegedly stole over $100,000 from grieving families while working at a cemetery. Latrecia Marshall-Parris, 48, is accused of taking advantage of her position assisting families with funeral arrangements and headstone purchases, which often involve cash payments. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to the scheme in August 2023, leading to Marshall-Parris being terminated from her job.

Investigations revealed that Marshall-Parris had allegedly pocketed $114,200 by diverting funds for her own use on 49 occasions between April 2022 and August 2023. In response to these findings, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged her with two counts of operating a continuing financial crime enterprise, felony theft, and felony theft by deception. Marshall-Parris was released on Friday pending trial.

This disturbing case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and oversight in all aspects of financial transactions, especially in sensitive situations like funeral arrangements. Families already dealing with the loss of a loved one should not have to worry about potential exploitation during such a vulnerable time. It is crucial for businesses to have stringent protocols in place to prevent and detect fraudulent activities.
