Will Congressional Republicans Attack Clean Energy in Budget Reconciliation?

The rapid growth of the clean energy economy has been fueled by strategic policies enacted by Congress in recent years. These policies have led to a quadrupling of investment in clean energy-related manufacturing, a significant increase in clean energy jobs, and billions of dollars in project investments. However, these policies are now under threat from both the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress.

The Trump administration has attempted to undermine clean energy policies through illegal actions, but their efforts are limited by existing laws. On the other hand, Republicans in Congress are considering using budget reconciliation to roll back clean energy policies in order to offset the costs of tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy.

Budget reconciliation is a process that allows legislation to be passed with a simple majority in both the House and Senate. Republicans have already begun the reconciliation process, but disagreements between the House and Senate could complicate their efforts.

The potential impact of repealing clean energy policies is significant. Policies such as clean electricity tax credits and targeted funds for clean energy deployment have been instrumental in driving investments and job creation in the sector. Repealing these policies could lead to project cancellations and hinder the growth of the clean energy economy.

While Republicans are considering various outcomes for clean energy policies, including repeal and phase-downs, the economic benefits of these policies are clear. Clean energy investments have bipartisan support and have proven to be a key driver of economic growth.

It is crucial for people and businesses to advocate for the preservation of clean energy policies during the budget reconciliation process. Reversing course on these policies would not only harm the economy in the short term but also undermine the nation’s competitiveness in the long run. Clean energy policy is smart economic policy, and it should not be sacrificed for the sake of tax cuts for a few.
