Netflix Unveils Three Indian Productions at APAC Showcase in Tokyo

Netflix recently showcased its commitment to diverse Indian storytelling at its APAC showcase in Tokyo, unveiling three upcoming Indian productions set for release in 2025. Leading the slate of titles are actors Rajkummar Rao and R. Madhavan.

Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, head of Netflix India original films, spearheaded the presentation, emphasizing the streaming platform’s dedication to showcasing a variety of Indian stories across languages and genres.

“This year will be our most diverse yet,” Sheikh stated. “Following the success of ‘Pushpa 2,’ ‘Dragon,’ and ‘Chhaava,’ we have a lineup of major theatrical films coming to Netflix in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.”

One of Netflix’s current offerings is “Test,” its first Tamil-language original film, a sports drama starring R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth. Sheikh also teased the upcoming release of “Jewel Thief,” a high-octane heist-action film featuring Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat.

The spotlight then shifted to three forthcoming productions. “Aap Jaisa Koi” stars R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Sheikh in a heartwarming romantic drama set in Kolkata. Directed by Vivek Soni, the film explores an unlikely relationship between an introverted teacher and a confident French teacher.

“Inspector Zende,” starring Manoj Bajpayee and Jim Sarbh, is inspired by true events from the 1980s. Directed by Chinmay Mandlekar, the film follows Madhukar Bapurao Zende, an ordinary cop with a strong sense of justice, as he pursues international criminal Carl Bhojraj.

Also in the lineup is “Toaster,” a comedy featuring Rajkummar Rao and produced by KAMPA Films, Rao’s new production house with his wife, actor Patralekhaa. The film follows Rao’s character, whose obsession with a wedding gift – a toaster – leads to unexpected chaos. The ensemble cast includes Sanya Malhotra, Abhishek Banerjee, Seema Pahwa, and Archana Puran Singh.

Sheikh highlighted Netflix’s recent successes, noting that films like “Amar Singh Chamkila,” “Maharaja,” and “Laapata Ladies” had resonated with audiences globally, breaking cultural barriers.

During a conversation with Sheikh, Rajkummar Rao shared the origin story of KAMPA Films: “We were in Goa on holiday when our friend suggested we start producing films. That’s how it all began.”

Rao also discussed his approach to comedy, emphasizing the importance of restraint in delivering humor. He stated, “I try not to force humor in comedy scenes, as it can ruin the moment. It’s all about being controlled.”

Netflix’s growing commitment to Indian films was reiterated by Sheikh, who emphasized the platform’s popularity in the country. She noted, “Nearly half of Netflix’s viewership in India comes from films, making it one of the highest globally. Indian films have consistently featured in Netflix’s Global Top 10 (Non-English) list every week.”
