In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday afternoon, a jury in Los Angeles found Orange County judge Jeffrey Ferguson guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal shooting of his wife, Sheryl.

The prosecution painted a grim picture of the incident, alleging that Ferguson, 74, was under the influence of alcohol when he shot his wife during a domestic dispute in their Anaheim Hills home on August 3, 2023.

Despite pleading not guilty to the murder charge, Ferguson’s attorney argued that the shooting was accidental, a claim that seemed to falter under the weight of the evidence presented.

The night of the tragedy escalated from a dinner argument to a shocking climax. Prosecutor Christopher Alex recounted how Ferguson, in a moment of rage, mimicked a firearm with his finger before retrieving a real pistol from his ankle holster and shooting Sheryl in the chest.

When law enforcement arrived, they found Ferguson visibly intoxicated. He reportedly expressed disbelief about his actions, stating, “Oh man, I can’t believe I did this.” In a subsequent message to a colleague, he confessed, “I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won’t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I’m so sorry.”

Due to concerns regarding potential bias, Ferguson’s trial was moved to Los Angeles, a decision reflecting the complexities of his professional connections within the Orange County judicial system, as noted by KABC.

As the verdict was delivered, Ferguson now faces a substantial prison sentence of up to 40 years, a sobering reminder of the tragic consequences stemming from domestic violence and alcohol abuse, as reported by KABC.
