Life can get overwhelming with the constant juggle of work, family, and unexpected chaos. But here’s a secret that can make a big difference: when your home is organised, life feels lighter. As the founder of Benella Home Organisation, I have spent over 20 years helping people bring calm to their homes. I have worked with families, busy professionals, downsizers, and those navigating life after loss, and I have seen firsthand how a clutter-free and well-organised home can have a positive impact on your mental and emotional well-being.

Today, I want to share some of my top tips for stress-free living that have been tried and tested over the years:

  1. Start Small And Stay Consistent: Instead of trying to tackle the entire house in one go, start with small areas like a drawer, shelf, or surface. I recommend doing a "Kettle Boils Tidy-Up" where you declutter a small area while waiting for the kettle to boil or dinner to cook.
  2. Set Up Systems That Work For You: Create systems in your home that make your day-to-day life run smoother. This could be a tray for keys and post by the door, labelled baskets for shoes, or a drawer for essential items like takeaway menus and batteries.
  3. Give Yourself Permission To Let Go: Don’t hold onto items out of guilt. Your home should reflect your present and future, not just your past. Keep what brings you joy and serves a purpose, and let go of the rest with kindness.
  4. Meal Plan To Minimise Daily Stress: Planning your meals for the week can reduce stress, save money, and prevent last-minute meal decisions. Take a few minutes each Sunday to jot down dinners for the week and create a shopping list.
  5. Create A Calm Zone: Designate a small area in your home as a calm zone, even if the rest of the house is chaotic. This space can be your sanctuary when things feel overwhelming.
  6. Don’t Wait For The Perfect Time: Start decluttering and organising imperfectly. Progress over perfection is key, so tackle one area at a time without waiting for the ideal moment.
  7. Use The Right Tools: Invest in a few key items like clear jars with labels, velvet hangers, wicker baskets, and a weekly planner to help you stay organised. Avoid buying storage before decluttering to prevent adding to clutter.
  8. Treat Organisation As Self Care: Decluttering and organising your home can be a nurturing act of self-care. By creating space and order, you are making your home work for you and gifting yourself more peace.

Remember, an organised home doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s about creating a space that feels good to be in and supports your busy life. If you’re ready to embrace stress-free living, start small, stay consistent, and be kind to yourself along the way.
