Youth sports have long been touted for their numerous benefits, including lower rates of anxiety and depression, reduced stress levels, improved bone health, lower risk of cancer and diabetes, and decreased risk of suicide among young people. A recent report from the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion highlighted these advantages, making a compelling case for parents to encourage their children to participate in sports activities.

However, for parents of transgender children, the positive impact of youth sports may be even more significant. Transgender youth are at higher risk of depression, anxiety, and suicidality, particularly in the current political climate where there are efforts to restrict gender-affirming care for young people. Engaging in sports can provide a sense of belonging, support, and emotional well-being for trans children, making it a particularly appealing option for their parents.

Unfortunately, recent executive orders, such as the one issued in February to prevent transfeminine athletes from participating in women’s sports, have created challenges for transgender youth. These policies are causing fear and uncertainty among trans children and their families, impacting their ability to participate in sports activities freely.

Chase Strangio, an ACLU attorney and trans rights advocate, emphasizes the importance of allowing transgender youth to engage in sports without facing discrimination or exclusion. Transgender children deserve the same opportunities to enjoy sports and educational experiences as their peers, without facing unnecessary obstacles or restrictions.

Hazel Heinzer, a parent of two nonbinary children, recognizes the positive impact of sports on her kids’ well-being. Although her children do not compete in organized events due to gender identity concerns, they have found a supportive community in their youth rock climbing team. Heinzer’s advocacy for her children’s right to participate in sports reflects the broader need for inclusivity and acceptance in athletic settings.

Ultimately, the message is clear: all children, regardless of their gender identity, deserve the chance to experience the physical, social, and emotional benefits of participating in youth sports. By fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for transgender youth in sports, we can create opportunities for personal growth, camaraderie, and overall well-being for all young athletes.
