A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx on Wednesday evening, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man and the injury of an innocent bystander. Marji Daoud, a resident of Yonkers, was fatally shot in the head when a gunman opened fire into a crowd on University Avenue near West Kingsbridge Road. Despite the efforts of first responders, Daoud succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to Saint Barnabas Hospital.

In addition to Daoud, a 33-year-old woman was also wounded in the attack, sustaining a gunshot wound to her left hip. She managed to transport herself to Woodhull Hospital, where she is currently in stable condition. Shockingly, the woman was not the intended target of the shooter, making her another innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.

It remains unclear whether Daoud was specifically targeted by the gunman or if he was another unintended victim. The suspect, who is still at large, reportedly fired into the crowd without a clear intended target identified by authorities. As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made as of early Thursday.

This tragic shooting comes on the heels of another senseless act of violence in the city, where Excenia Mette, a beloved grandmother and trailblazing businesswoman, was fatally shot in Harlem. Mette, who was known for opening the first black- and woman-owned bodega in the 1980s, was caught in a gun battle between two men as she stepped out of a salon in her apartment building. She tragically passed away at a nearby hospital.

The recent surge in gun violence underscores the urgent need for greater efforts to address and prevent such incidents from occurring in our communities. The loss of innocent lives like Marji Daoud and Excenia Mette serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on individuals and communities alike.
