A tragic incident occurred in Lincoln Park last week when 28-year-old Kevin Patel was shot and killed near his home. The Chicago Police Department has charged 25-year-old Josalyn Fowler from the south suburbs with murder and attempted armed robbery in connection with Patel’s death. Fowler is set to appear for a detention hearing on Friday, where more details about the events leading to Patel’s killing will be disclosed.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the 800 block of West Lill, where Patel resided, around 9:20 p.m. on April 16. After the shooting, witnesses saw a man and a woman fleeing towards Halsted Street. Despite efforts to save him, Patel, an actuary, succumbed to his injuries that night.

Initial speculation surrounding the incident suggested that Patel may have been targeted by package thieves. Investigators found a glove and a package near the crime scene, fueling this theory. Further details about the motive behind the shooting may be revealed during Fowler’s court appearance.

Court records indicate that Fowler was previously arrested in February 2022 for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in Englewood. She ultimately pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge and served two days in custody. While CPD has confirmed Fowler’s involvement in Patel’s murder, it is unclear whether she was the one who pulled the trigger. More information is expected to emerge during the legal proceedings.

Described as a compassionate and kind-hearted individual, Patel was known for his positive influence on those around him. An online obituary highlighted his generous spirit and friendly demeanor, emphasizing his commitment to spreading joy and positivity. In honor of his memory, Patel’s brother Neil has set up a GoFundMe campaign to seek justice for Kevin and support initiatives aimed at preventing similar acts of violence in communities.

The grieving family is determined to seek justice for Kevin and ensure that his untimely death serves as a catalyst for positive change. While nothing can bring back their beloved son and sibling, they are dedicated to advocating for safer communities and honoring Kevin’s legacy. The outpouring of support from friends, family, and strangers is a testament to the impact that Patel had on those around him.

As we await further updates on this heartbreaking case, it is crucial to remember the importance of standing together to combat senseless acts of violence and preserve the memory of individuals like Kevin Patel. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.
