‘Very relieved’: Greymouth boil water notice finally lifted
SHARE
The boil water notice for Greymouth and surrounding areas has finally been lifted today, marking the end of a more than two-week ordeal. The notice was initially issued on 9 April due to the presence of Coliform bacteria and low levels of E Coli in the water supply.

Grey District Council received a revised directive from Taumata Arowai earlier this week, allowing them to lift the boil water notice after confirming that the water treatment facility now meets the required standards. Despite this positive development, the source of the contamination remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

Kurtin Perrin-Smith, council group manager operations, emphasized that they are thoroughly examining all possible sources of concern as part of their investigation. Mayor Tania Gibson expressed gratitude for the community’s patience during this challenging time, acknowledging the stress it has caused for both residents and the council.

Mayor Gibson likened the search for the contamination source to finding a needle in a haystack but shared relief that their water has tested clear for five consecutive days. Fortunately, there have been no reports of illnesses linked to the water contamination.

The community can now breathe a sigh of relief as normalcy returns to Greymouth and its surroundings. The council’s continuous efforts to ensure safe drinking water are commendable, and residents can rest assured that their well-being remains a top priority.
