Until Dawn Review: Different Setting, Same Psychological Torture

The film adaptation of the popular horror game “Until Dawn” has finally hit the big screen in 2025, bringing with it a mix of new elements and familiar faces. As a fan of the game, I was curious to see how this adaptation would stack up against the original source material.

The movie follows a group of teens on a road trip to find a missing sister, set against a backdrop that differs from the snowy mountains of the game. Despite the change in setting, the film still manages to capture the eerie atmosphere that made the game so captivating. Peter Stormare’s appearance as the gas station clerk adds a touch of familiarity for fans of the game, although his role in the film is not explicitly tied to his character in the game.

Fear plays a central role in the film, driving the group to confront their fears and learn from their mistakes as they navigate through multiple terrifying encounters. The movie cleverly incorporates elements of the game’s interactive storytelling, leaving me longing to experience a game version of the film.

While the cast delivers solid performances, the lack of backstory and character development leaves something to be desired. Flashbacks from the game that provided crucial context are notably absent in the film. However, the inclusion of Easter eggs and homages to the game adds depth to the story and invites both fans and newcomers to the genre to enjoy the film.

One standout addition to the adaptation is the personification of the hourglass from the game cover, symbolizing the characters’ mortality and the consequences of their actions. This clever twist adds a unique dimension to the story and effectively captures the essence of the game’s branching narratives.

Despite its shortcomings, “Until Dawn” manages to carve out its own identity within the horror genre while paying tribute to its source material. While the film may not be perfect, it offers a thrilling and gory experience that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. And who knows, it may even inspire viewers to revisit the original game or dive into its immersive gameplay for the first time.

In conclusion, “Until Dawn” is a must-watch for fans of horror and fans of the game alike. While it may not fully capture the depth of the original storytelling, it delivers a fun and frightening experience that will leave you wanting more. So grab your popcorn, settle into your seat, and brace yourself for a night of scares and surprises at the cinema.
