A horrifying incident recently occurred in Kenya involving Ugandan athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who was attacked and set on fire by her boyfriend. The brutal attack resulted in Cheptegei sustaining burns on 75% of her body, requiring specialized treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city.

Cheptegei, a distance runner who represented Uganda in the 2024 Paris Olympics, was attacked in her house in the western Trans Nzoia County. According to Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom, the attack occurred during a disagreement when Cheptegei’s boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, bought a jerrican of petrol, poured it on her, and set her ablaze. Ndiema also suffered burn wounds in the incident.

The couple was reportedly heard fighting over the land where their house was built before the fire started, as stated in a report filed by the local chief. Cheptegei’s parents revealed that their daughter had purchased land in Trans Nzoia to be closer to the county’s numerous athletic training centers.

This tragic incident is not the first involving athletes in the region. In 2023, Ugandan Olympic runner and steeplechaser Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead with stab wounds, while in 2022, Kenyan-born Bahraini athlete Damaris Muthee was found dead, with a postmortem report indicating strangulation.

The sports community and authorities have been shocked by these violent incidents targeting athletes, highlighting the need for increased awareness and protection for sports personalities. The case of Rebecca Cheptegei serves as a grim reminder of the dangers faced by athletes, both on and off the field.
