International Crab Day is just around the corner on April 26, and it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on the Crab Museum in Margate for its vocal support of transgender rights. This support comes in the wake of a controversial ruling by the United Kingdom Supreme Court, which defined a woman based on “biological sex” rather than gender identity.

The Crab Museum took to Instagram to share its thoughts on the ruling, pointing out the court’s assertion that the concept of sex is binary according to the Equality Act of 2010. The museum, known for its expertise in biology and evolutionary history, emphasized that there are no binaries in nature and that biology should never be taken for granted. The museum went on to criticize the ruling as an abuse of science and highlighted the fact that biological sex is a spectrum.

Meanwhile, the Vagina Museum in London also spoke out against the ruling, expressing solidarity with their trans staff, partners, and community. The museum reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and challenging normative assumptions about gender and anatomy.

The Crab Museum, a family-founded educational center that opened in 2021, has gained popularity for its unique premise, free admission, and engaging social media presence. The museum doesn’t shy away from using its platform to address larger social issues, using crabs as a starting point for conversations about capitalism, colonialism, and the ecosystem.

As we celebrate International Crab Day, let’s not only appreciate the fascinating world of crustaceans but also recognize the importance of supporting transgender rights and inclusivity in all spaces. The Crab Museum and Vagina Museum serve as reminders that education, awareness, and advocacy are key in creating a more accepting and understanding society.
