Trump had mentioned progress in talks with Russia and Ukraine, indicating they were very close to a deal. Musk’s statement came following Trump’s post about attending Pope Francis’ funeral in Rome.
Describing the war as “cruel and senseless,” Trump urged an immediate cessation of hostilities, mentioning that most major points had been agreed upon. He also expressed US willingness to assist in ending the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow, discussions revolved around the US plan to end the conflict in Ukraine. Putin even considered the possibility of direct talks with the opposing side.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected any notion of Crimea being part of Russian territory, emphasizing Ukraine’s refusal to recognize the annexation. Zelensky cited constitutional reasons for this stance.
