During their only scheduled debate in the 4th Congressional District race, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and Democratic opponent Trisha Calvarese clashed over veterans care, the national debt, and Boebert’s congressional record. Calvarese criticized Boebert for voting against a bill that included provisions for lower prescription drug prices and defended President Joe Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. Boebert, seeking a third term in a new district, emphasized cutting taxes, securing the southern border, and bringing back prosperity.

Calvarese highlighted her desire for partnership and compromise, contrasting it with Boebert’s approach, which she described as divisive. Despite Boebert’s reputation as a partisan member of Congress, she pointed to bipartisan efforts, including supporting a bill with a Colorado Democrat to use federal land for housing.

National Debt

Boebert advocated for going through spending line by line and opposed larger omnibus funding bills. Calvarese focused on taxing corporations hiding money abroad and providing tax breaks for the middle class. They disagreed on the corporate tax rate and extending individual income tax cuts.

Veterans

Calvarese accused Boebert of not supporting veterans due to her votes on VA budget cuts and health benefits for veterans exposed to toxic substances. Boebert defended her record, citing issues with the legislation and criticizing the VA’s responsiveness.

Economic Lightning Round

Both candidates addressed questions on the federal minimum wage, taxes on tips, privatizing social security benefits, and foreign entities buying American farmland.

More Debates?

Calvarese called for additional televised debates, but Boebert did not commit, citing her regular interactions with Democrats.
