Quitone Nash (Chicago Police Department, Jacob G.)

Man on Parole for Armed Robbery and Carjacking Allegedly Fires Gun at Chicago CTA Station

A 23-year-old man, Quitone Nash, who was on parole for armed robbery and carjacking, allegedly fired a gun towards a crowd on the 79th Street Red Line platform last Sunday evening. Prosecutors claim that Nash then hid the stolen firearm in a CTA garbage can. Nash’s criminal history includes prior incidents in 2020 and 2021.

Incident Details

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Nash waving at a group of people to lure them into the CTA station around 5:30 p.m. When the group approached, Nash allegedly tried to initiate a physical altercation by grabbing one person and throwing a punch. The video shows Nash pulling out a gun and firing a single round towards the crowd, although fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

Chicago police officers on patrol witnessed the altercation and observed Nash firing the gun towards the crowd. Subsequently, CTA video footage allegedly showed Nash discarding the firearm in a garbage can on the platform. The gun was reported stolen from Matteson on Christmas Eve, according to CPD reports.

During the investigation, Nash initially denied having a gun but later admitted to grabbing the weapon while being attacked by a group of Hispanic men armed with bats, steak knives, and a taser. Nash claimed that he may have placed the gun somewhere on the platform. Judge Luciano Panici, Jr., deemed Nash a safety risk and ordered him back to prison for a parole violation, with a new release date set for December 2027.

Prior Criminal Incidents

In a separate incident on the day before Thanksgiving in 2020, Nash and two accomplices allegedly assaulted a Pink Line passenger near the Damen stop. The victim, who was sitting alone and using his phone, was targeted by Nash and his companions. Nash reportedly initiated the attack by attempting to take the victim’s phone and skateboard, leading to an eight-minute assault involving kicks, punches, and the theft of the victim’s shoes.

Eight days later, Nash and two others were accused of carjacking a man in the Jewel-Osco parking lot at 1341 North Paulina. The victim was sleeping in his car when Nash and his accomplices forcibly removed him from the vehicle, resulting in a violent altercation.

CTA surveillance footage and witness statements corroborated the events of both incidents, leading to Nash’s detention and return to prison for parole violations.
