A Pueblo police officer and a 16-year-old suspect sustained injuries during a car chase and shootout that took place in the early hours of Monday morning.

Authorities were alerted to a shooting and assault incident near Northern and Abriendo avenues around 12:16 a.m. on Monday, as stated in a news release by the Pueblo Police Department.

The first responding officer identified a suspect vehicle linked to an earlier assault at 4th Street and Glendale Avenue, approximately three miles away from the initial incident, according to the news release.

Upon the arrival of additional officers, the 16-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, exited the suspect vehicle and proceeded to carjack another vehicle at gunpoint, as per the police report.

Although the teenager was a passenger in the vehicle, the extent of the driver’s involvement remains unclear.

The 16-year-old shot at the Pueblo officer who tried to intervene with the stolen vehicle before fleeing the scene, the police department reported. The injured officer is anticipated to recover.

Authorities mentioned that the early morning car chase covered nearly four miles throughout Pueblo and culminated in a confrontation between officers and the teenager in the 4600 block of Thatcher Avenue, close to the Pueblo Zoo.

The suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound from the officers and was transported to the hospital by paramedics. The individual is expected to survive, according to law enforcement.

Individuals with information regarding the incident are urged to contact investigators at 719-553-2502 or Pueblo Crime Stoppers at 719-542-7867.
