Despite other media outlets, including the BBC, hesitating to declare a winner due to the tight margins, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has boldly announced Mark Carney’s victory with only about 10% of the votes counted.
However, they caution that it remains uncertain whether this will lead to a majority or minority government.
The electoral contest has been fiercely contested, with issues revolving around former President Donald J. Trump’s tariffs and his provocative musings about Canada potentially becoming the 51st state. As Canadians cast their votes in this snap election, the stakes are high for determining the country’s next leader.
Polling stations are beginning to close, just six weeks after Mark Carney took over as Prime Minister from the beleaguered Justin Trudeau.
According to the BBC, “The two leading parties are the Liberal Party, helmed by Carney, which has governed for the last decade, and the Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre.”
“US President Donald Trump has also weighed in on the election via social media, reiterating his calls for Canada to join the United States as the 51st state.”
“In response, Poilievre urged Trump to ‘stay out of our election,’ while Carney appealed to Canadians to remain ‘united and strong’ in the face of a ‘crisis in the United States.’”
In a campaign where former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was notably sidelined to protect the Liberal Party’s prospects, both Carney and Poilievre grappled with the fallout from Trump’s policies and remarks.
Canada has already retaliated with approximately C$65 billion in tariffs in response to American trade measures.
“The US has imposed blanket tariffs of 25% on Canadian goods, with certain exemptions, alongside global tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and imported vehicles.”
Both the Conservative and Liberal parties have committed to upholding some form of retaliatory tariffs.
“Carney has indicated that the Liberals would pivot towards targeted tariffs aimed at inflicting maximum discomfort on the US while minimizing the impact on Canadian businesses.”
As Canadians await the final election results, the Elections Canada website is experiencing technical difficulties, leaving some voters unable to access real-time updates. The cause of the disruption remains unclear.
