IXI’s innovative approach to prescription eyewear is truly groundbreaking. The startup, based in Finland, is revolutionizing the market with its cutting-edge technology that combines eye-tracking and liquid crystal lens technology. The result? Low-power glasses that automatically adjust to correct presbyopia, a common condition that causes far-sightedness.

After four years of development, IXI has finally emerged from stealth mode, announcing a total of $36.5 million in funding from investors that include the Amazon Alexa fund. Leading the latest round of Series A funding is London-based VC firm Plural, with participation from a range of other investors. The startup’s impressive roster of investors speaks to the potential of its innovative product.

IXI’s co-founders, Niko Eiden and Ville Miettinen, bring a wealth of experience to the table. Both have a background in groundbreaking mobile technology, having previously worked at Nokia and later starting Varjo, a mixed-reality headset developer. While VR and mixed reality continue to be exciting fields, Eiden notes the challenges of finding a viable market for these technologies. This led the team to focus on eyewear as a medical device, specifically targeting vision correction.

Unlike other AR and VR companies, IXI’s primary goal is to improve eyesight rather than provide entertainment or information. The company’s patented technology uses eye-tracking and liquid crystal lenses to automatically adjust the glasses for optimal vision. This innovation allows users to have a single pair of glasses that can accommodate various vision needs, making them more convenient and practical than traditional eyewear.

IXI estimates that the battery life of its glasses will be around two days, with built-in near-sighted prescriptions for clear vision at a distance. While other companies are also exploring autofocus eyewear, IXI’s seamless design sets it apart from competitors. Investors are confident in the startup’s ability to execute its vision, given its track record of success.

Amazon’s quick investment in IXI underscores the potential impact of the company’s technology. The idea of on-demand vision correction in prescription eyewear is compelling, especially considering the limitations of current solutions. With IXI’s innovative approach, the future of eyewear looks clearer than ever. The IXI team, known for their groundbreaking work at Varjo in advancing VR/XR technologies, is now poised to tackle new challenges in the eyewear industry. With Amazon already selling readers for long-sightedness on its marketplace, there is clear potential for the company to delve deeper into the world of eyewear.

One notable project that emerged in November 2024 was Amazon’s development of special glasses for delivery drivers to streamline parcel deliveries. While these glasses would fall more into the mixed-reality eyewear category, it hints at Amazon’s interest in expanding its eyewear offerings beyond traditional lenses. As Amazon continues to expand its presence in sectors like pharmacy, there is an opportunity for the company to leverage its scale in eyewear production to address both corrective vision and AR/VR use cases.

According to Eiden and Havu, the technology being developed by the IXI team has already shown promise in lab settings. They anticipate revealing a prototype later this year, although a timeline for a market-ready product remains undisclosed pending necessary approvals. Despite this, the startup’s innovative approach to advanced optics and eye-tracking has garnered significant investor interest, signaling a bright future ahead.

Sten Tamkivi, a partner at Plural, commended the IXI team for their expertise in European hardware and their pioneering work in vision technology. He emphasized the potential for IXI’s technology to revolutionize how we perceive the world, offering a glimpse into a future where advancements in eyewear improve human eyesight in unprecedented ways.

As IXI continues to push the boundaries of innovation, their journey towards creating cutting-edge eyewear solutions remains one to watch. With a focus on invisible technology that enhances vision, IXI is poised to make a lasting impact on the eyewear industry and beyond. Stay tuned for updates on IXI’s progress as they pave the way for a new era of vision technology.
