In these tumultuous times for the Catholic Church, it’s crucial to remember that no shifting tides in papal politics should shake our faith in the New and Eternal Covenant.

This Easter, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., hosted a packed Mass to honor the holiest day in the Christian calendar—the Easter Vigil.

As the clock struck 8:00 PM on Saturday, April 19, the Basilica sealed its Holy Doors, commencing the Service of Light with over 3,500 worshipers gathered to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Inside the dimly lit Great Upper Church, a grand clerical procession illuminated the magnificent Paschal Candle, symbolically dispelling the shadows of eternal death.

“On this sacred night, our Lord Jesus Christ transitioned from death to life. Christ, yesterday and today, the beginning and the end—time and eternity belong to Him,” proclaimed His Eminence, Cardinal Christophe Pierre. “May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.”

Following this, ministers passed the fire of Eternal Life to the congregation, igniting thousands of handheld candles from the radiant Paschal Candle.

Here is an awe-inspiring image capturing the Great Upper Church, now aglow with the sacred fire of Eternal Life.

Over the course of 2.5 hours, the Easter Vigil unfolded with a selection of sacred hymns traditionally reserved for this occasion, interspersed with an uplifting homily delivered by Cardinal Pierre.

As the Mass drew to a close, over 3,500 worshipers partook in the Holy Eucharist, sealing the event’s significance.

Even after the final blessing, the faithful lingered, worshiping within the 82 chapels dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary located in the Basilica, the largest Catholic church in North America.

Construction of the Basilica began in 1920 and was finally completed in 2017. It now ranks among the ten largest Catholic churches globally.

As we move forward, let us pray for a renewed grace within the global Catholic Church while holding steadfast to the teachings of Jesus Christ, which remain as accessible as ever in our daily lives.
