The White House recently criticized Amazon for what it called a “hostile and political act” after a report surfaced alleging that the tech giant was planning to display price increases caused by Donald Trump’s tariffs on its products. According to Punchbowl News, Amazon was reportedly planning to show the impact of the levies on the price of each product it sells.

President Trump reportedly spoke with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos about the company’s plans and expressed his displeasure. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt labeled Amazon’s actions as expected, questioning why the company didn’t take similar steps when inflation rates rose under the Biden administration.

Amazon, however, clarified that the potential price increases were only being considered for goods sold through its low-cost Amazon Haul platform. The company stated that listing import charges on certain products was never approved or implemented on any of its main platforms.

Despite past tensions between Trump and Bezos, their relationship seems to have improved. Bezos attended Trump’s second inauguration as US president, and the two have reportedly met multiple times in the past year. Amazon even donated to Trump’s inauguration fund and paid for a documentary on Melania Trump.

As the White House prepares to close a duty exemption loophole known as de minimis rules, Amazon’s Haul platform, which sells affordable consumer goods directly from Chinese warehouses, may be affected. Trump’s recent imposition of reciprocal tariffs on US trading partners has caused market fluctuations, but negotiations are underway to potentially lower these rates.
