Three juveniles, aged 13 to 16, were victims of a horrifying incident in Chatham early Tuesday morning when they were shot by automatic rifle fire while standing outside. The shooting took place in the 7900 block of South Maryland around 12:23 a.m., according to the account provided by the 16-year-old girl and two boys, ages 14 and 13, who were targeted by a gunman in a red SUV. The rapid gunfire prompted an officer on patrol to respond, noting that it sounded like automatic gunfire, with investigators subsequently discovering rifle casings strewn along the street.

Fortunately, despite the traumatic experience, the girl and the 13-year-old were both shot in the foot, while the 14-year-old boy sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle. All three victims were reported to be in good condition as they received medical attention at Comer Children’s Hospital, as confirmed by a statement from the Chicago Police Department.

This disturbing incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges and dangers faced by residents in certain communities, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and efforts to address gun violence in the city. The fact that juveniles were targeted in this brazen attack underscores the vulnerability of young individuals to such senseless acts of violence, further emphasizing the importance of community support and intervention to protect and uplift our youth.

As we reflect on this troubling event, it is crucial to acknowledge the impact of gun violence on individuals, families, and communities, and to work towards meaningful solutions that prioritize safety, justice, and healing for all. Our thoughts are with the victims of this shooting, and we hope for their swift recovery and the swift apprehension of those responsible for this reprehensible crime.
